Welp, I made it to Denver. The trip went fine -- but talk about over the river and through the woods!
At 6:45am we were still sitting in the New York conference room negotiating, and I was starting to despair of catching the 8:00am train back to DC. But then the partner leaned over and signalled for me to leave. I wasn't going to make him signal twice: I packed up my things and tiptoed out the back of the room.
From there I raced back to the hotel (and its undisturbed bed!) to pack my suitcase and settle the bill. Fifteen minutes later I was in a cab, heading across town to Penn Station. Once there, I pulled up the reservation that my secretary had made the day before, printed my ticket and boarded the train.
I managed to stay awake on the train long enough to order breakfast (gotta love first class!) but was already asleep by the time it came. The poor attendant had to wake me up to hand me my omelette and Perrier. I swallowed a few bites, enough to take the edge off my hunger, and promptly fell back to sleep. I didn't rejoin the land of the living until we pulled into DC's Union Station two hours and forty-five minutes later -- oh, glorious sleep!
I then had just under two hours to get home, shower, repack my suitcase for a week's vacation out West, water my plants, and get to the airport for my flight to Denver. I certainly had no time to spare, and thankfully it ended up being less of a scramble than I'd anticipated. I arrived at the terminal with a few minutes to spare -- enough to have a bite to eat, but not enough to fall back to sleep.
The flights themselves were a blur. Seriously, I've never slept so soundly in a plane in my life! By the time I landed in Denver, I felt more rested than I had in days.
Amanda picked me up at the airport and we headed back to her place after a quick dinner on the road. Then, as we always do, we sat in the living room and talked for a couple of hours. With our separate busy lives, we haven't really talked that much since Morocco last summer. It has been really great to see her and catch up on things that we've been doing.
One of the things I like most about our friendship is the richness and depth of familiarity that we have. After thirteen years of friendship, we've done a lot together, created many shared memories and common experiences. It's fun to be in her apartment and see things that remind me of the early years in Salt Lake all the way through our big international trips to Turkey, Peru and Morocco. Even more than that, I appreciate the thoughtful things she does to make me feel welcome. I especially love that she put fresh flowers in the guest bathroom!
